“The best time to plant a tree was
20 years ago; the second best time is now”
Chinese Proverb
The human body is unbelievably
forgiving. Over the years it can take a lot of abuse and
still rally back. In fact, it’s never really too late to
make positive changes in your health habits and lifestyle.
Even if you have gone most of your
life without exercising, take up a fitness program and in
8-12 weeks you have already lowered your risk factors for
certain ailments. Continue, and it gets better and better.
If you think it’s too late for you, consider the 90 and
100 year old sedentary nursing home residents who were
placed on a simple exercise routine and pretty rapidly
added needed strength to their frail frames, improved
every day function and required less assistance.
Smokers, listen up—there is still way
too many of you, given what we now know. Your lungs and
cardiovascular system have tremendous repair capabilities.
Stop smoking and your lungs can relatively quickly re-form
a healthy lining and if you stay smoke-free for several
years you can dramatically reduce your risk of developing
lung cancer, a mostly preventable, horrific disease that
takes too many of us, too young.
None of us are perfect. We all have
areas that we can improve- nutrition, exercise, stress
reduction, regular check-ups, seatbelts—the list goes on.
Take a personal inventory. You know what needs to be done.
Also, don’t get frustrated if you fall off the wagon. We
all do, but don’t stay off too long
Also, don’t spend too much time
doting on past pursuits. Even if you were your high school
star quarterback, or rowed crew in college and the
Olympics, if you’ve been on the couch for the last few
years, all your prior accomplishments mean nothing to your
current health profile. The body may be forgiving, but it
also forgets quickly. These need to be lifetime habits to
really be helpful to you in the long run. Past activities
don’t translate to future benefits. What have you done for
me lately definitely applies here.
FitTip:
It’s never too late to change your
fate. Take a step today. Trade one unhealthy habit for a
healthy one.
